There is a single species that is responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic - us. As with the climate and biodiversity crises, recent pandemics are a direct consequence of human activity – particularly our global financial and economic systems, based on a limited paradigm that prizes economic growth at any cost. We have a small window of opportunity, in overcoming the challenges of the current crisis, to avoid sowing the seeds of future ones.  

Così esordisce un gruppo di esperti guidati da Peter Daszack nell’articolo COVID-19 Stimulus Measures Must Save Lives, Protect Livelihoods, and Safeguard Nature to Reduce the Risk of Future Pandemics. Possiamo giocare a rimbalzare le responsabilità di qua e di la degli oceani, ma la colpa è del genere umano che non ha più voluto riconoscersi come elemento della Natura.

La pandemia che stiamo vivendo non è che la prima di molte altre che seguiranno se non vengono fatte delle scelte corrette già oggi. Per iniziare dovrebbero essere disincentivate le attività ad alto impatto ambientale e dirigere le risorse economiche risparmiate verso attività sostenibili e pronatura, anche se politicamente nel breve termine questo può non essere elettoralmente pagante. Poi si dovrebbe adottare l’approccio One Health, una visione olistica integrata della salute umana, della salute animale e della salute dell’ecosistema. Infine, i sistemi sanitari vanno adeguatamente finanziati e dotati di risorse per poter far fronte a nuove epidemie.

È arrivato il momento di rivedere la globalizzazione così come la conosciamo, o ci viene presentata, e globalmente rivedere paradigmi, obiettivi e valori.

Responding to the COVID-19 crisis calls for us all to confront the vested interests that oppose transformative change, and to end ‘business as usual’. We can build back better and emerge from the current crisis stronger and more resilient than ever – but to do so means choosing policies and actions that protect nature – so that nature can help to protect us.

Andamento incoraggiante con l’aumento dei guariti e la diminuizione dei pazienti in terapia intensiva.

Per quanto riguarda gli andamenti regionali, trovo interessante questo grafico che mostra il Crude Fatality Rate nelle Regioni italiane. Il Piemonte sta facendo brutti balzi in avanti. C’è un certo affastellamento al centro.
